The landmark of the city is the ruined Bagrati Cathedral, built by Bagrat III, king of Georgia, in the early 11th century and the Gelati Monastery
Gelati is a monastic complex. It contains the Church of the Virgin founded in 1106 and the 13th-century churches of St George and St Nicholas. Here is buried one of the greatest Georgian kings, David the Builder ( the founder of one these churches).
The Gelati Monastery was one of the main cultural and intellectual centers in Georgia for a long time. There was an Academy where studied famous philosophers.
It has preserved a great number of murals and manuscripts dating back to the 12th to 17th centuries.
Gelati Monastery and Bagrati Cathedral were recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Besides the churches, there are many interesting places in Kutaisi, such as: Sataplia Cave, where one can observe footprints of dinosaurs. It is one of the few pristine areas where you can still see a portion of ancient Colhian forests.
Sataplia Cave is named after Sataplia Mountain. Sataplia means ‘place of honey’. It is 900 m long and 12 m wide. It contains stalictites and stalagmites.
A Conservation Center and Museum have been constructed, together with glass walkways, viewing points, a cafeteria and children's play area.
